Chapter 16

Kathy

I woke up the next morning to an empty bed. Slowly, I dragged myself up and made my way into the living room to find Dylan nervously pacing around.

“You look like you have a wife in labor,” I said, eyeing him from the doorway.

He shot me an amused look. “It’s worse. My mother is on her way.”

“Right now?” my tone immediately became panicked. “But I look like a mess. Why didn’t you wake me up sooner?”

“I felt bad for keeping you up so late,” he smirked, before returning to his nervous pacing.

A blush crept onto my cheeks. I didn’t remember how many rounds we did last night. I’d lost track… and most of my senses after the third time.

I hurried back to the room to make myself look presentable. Somehow, meeting his mother for the second time felt more nerve wracking than the first. Since the weekend at his parents’ place went so well, I felt a certain pressure to uphold my image in front of her.

It was weird how I was meeting his mother twice in the span of one week. My last boyfriend didn’t even introduce me to his parents until the very end of our relationship I got to see them only once. Even though we weren’t actually together, I liked how Dylan had such respect for his mom and valued her opinion.

“She’ll be here in five,” Dylan yelled at me from the living room when I was still in the middle of putting on my makeup.

In haste, I brushed my cheeks with a rosy, pink color and put on some mascara. I wanted to keep my look casual but still put-together.

I walked out of the bedroom in record time, in my navy blue bodycon dress that hit just below the knee and loosely curled my hair before making it in a messy low ponytail. Just then, the door flung open and Dylan’s mother walked in with a steady stride.

“Dylan,” she gushed and opened her arms to wrap him in a hug. “I am so happy to see you.”

“You know you’re always welcome here, Mom,” Dylan said, and gestured over for me to come and meet her as well.

“And Kathy, look at you,” she beamed, eyeing me up and down. “You look even more beautiful than the last time I saw you.”

“I could say the same thing about you,” I replied. “You look so good that I could mistake you for Dylan’s sister.”

“Getting on without me?” A deep male voice boomed from the doorway and all three of us snapped our heads to look. “Tell me, Kathy. Do I look young enough to be his brother?”

It was Dylan’s dad. I looked at Dylan and noticed he had immediately tensed up. The warm smile on his face had been replaced with a stone-cold expression.

“I didn’t know you were coming too,” Dylan seethed, his jaw tight. “Mom, why didn’t you tell me he was coming?”

His mom awkwardly shuffled her feet and looked at the ground.

“What now?” his father continued.
